Why crisis in Akwa Ibom Assembly escalated – Eseme Eyibo

Image
Hon. Eseme Eyibo, a former member of the National Assembly has claimed that the crisis rocking the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly is as a result of a ‘delinquent legislative display’ on the part of the Speaker, Onofiok Luke. The former lawmaker in an exclusive interview with DAILY POST in Uyo questioned the rationale behind the Speaker’s declaration of the seats of the five APC lawmakers vacant why the seat of a member representing Uruefong/Oruko constituency, Hon Asuquo Archibong remained intact despite the fact that he defected from the APC to the PDP sometime last year. According to Eyibo, “What is happening in the Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly can be described as poor judgement and legislative delinquency on the part of the Speaker, and the governor iced the cake by his disrespect to the principles of separation of powers. “The origin of this is very clear, last year, one and only APC legislator defected to PDP when there was no crisis in APC a...

Image
Diamond Bank Plc, Nigeria’s fastest growing retail bank, has received the approval of the Central Bank of Nigeria following its application to operate as a National Bank with immediate effect (subject to conclusion of the sale of Diamond Bank UK- DB UK Plc). With this approval the bank will cease to operate as an International Bank. The re-licensing as a national bank supports Diamond’s objective of streamlining its operations to focus resources on the significant opportunities in the Nigerian retail banking market, and economy as a whole. The move follows Diamond’s decision to sell its international operations, which included the disposal of its West African Subsidiary in 2017 and Diamond Bank UK, the sale of which is currently in its final stages. The change to national bank status also enables the bank to maintain a lower minimum capital requirement of 10% as against 15% required for international banks. This creates room for the bank to deploy more capital for st...

Anxiety in Ekiti APC over Buhari’s delay in appointing Fayemi’s replacement

Image
Five months after the Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, resigned as a minister appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari, strong anxiety has gripped members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the delay by the President to appoint a replacement as promised. Sources said members are becoming disillusioned for being kept in abeyance for too long by the presidency owing to the role a minister from the state would have played in the 2019 presidential election, where they expect a strong link between Ekiti and Abuja. Fayemi, who was the minister of Mines and Steel Development, resigned in May 2018 after clinching the governorship ticket of the party to contest the July 14 election and no replacement from the state has been made since then. Apart from the APC members, critical stakeholders including Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers and other concerned statesmen are beginning to see that Ekiti was being shortchanged by the vacuum created by not having a representati...

The group said it viewed Secondus’ call, where he demanded for the INEC boss’ resignation in order to guarantee a credible 2019 poll, as too ridiculous to be heard, from any serious political party, when elections are less than 80 days away. Speaking through its Secretary-General, Comrade Joseph Olarinde, YORA said the PDP should desist from the politicisation of serious issues such as the credibility of an election, alleging that credible election is an alien practice in the PDP. The group wondered why the PDP is so persistent about getting the INEC Chairman removed, even at a time when several other political parties, local and International organisations continue to ...
