About 4,000 students of Osun State University may be expelled for failing to pay their school fees before the February 28, 2017 deadline set by the authorities of the institution. The affected students may also miss the first semester examination scheduled to begin on March 6. The management of the university disclosed this in a statement by the Corporate Affairs Unit yesterday. According to the statement, as at Saturday, 4,410 students were yet to fulfill this obligation 48 hours to the expiration of the deadline. The institution’s management set a deadline for payment of school fees when it discovered that many students had not done this, adding that the development has affected the smooth running of the system. The Guardian learnt that many of the affected students owe the university school fees between two and more semesters. Six members of a syndicate involved in illegal currency trafficking were arrested on Friday at Oshodi and Lagos Island areas of the state.According to Police statement, the syndicate was smashed in a joint operation by the police and officials of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The suspects were caught with N855, 290 in N20, N50 and N200 denominations. “The suspects violated Section 21, sub-section (4) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007 and shall be brought to justice accordingly.“It’s a punishable offence for any person to hawk or trade the Naira notes, coins or any other note issued by the Central Bank. It is also an offence to spray, dance or match on the Naira note or any note issued by the Central Bank during social occasions,” said the new Lagos Police spokesman, Famous Cole. The Command advised the general public to desist from engaging in this illegality, as violators shall be made to face the full wrath of the law.

Arabi said the budget cut in 2016, from N16.5 billion to N13. 5 billion, in 2017, represents 18.08 percent reduction in comparison with the sum appropriated last year. The National Space Research and Development Agency has said that there would be a partial Solar eclipse across the country on Feb. 26. The Head of Media and Corporate Communications, Dr Felix Ale, in a statement on Thursday said, “A partial solar eclipse will be visible all over the country with different degree of totality to occur on Sunday , February 26.” According to Ale, the highest degree of obscurity of 33 percent will be observed in the country during the natural occurrence in the southern part of Nigeria, particularly Port Harcourt, Uyo and Calabar. He said that the lowest degree of obscurity would be about nine percent in the northern part of Nigeria, particularly in Kebbi. Suspected hoodlums in Emu-Ebendo community, Ndokwa West Local Council of Delta State have allegedly killed a herdsman, Haruna Mohammed, in an encounter, which occurred on Sunday evening. The unidentified hoodlums later threw the body into a flowing river within the community. The incident, it was gathered yesterday, is generating tension and fears of reprisals in the community. According to a source, the hoodlums ran into the herdsman and his cattle in the bush while they were attempting to ambush and rob unsuspecting persons, when a quarrel ensured. • Another held for producing fake cough syrup Nasarawa State Police Command yesterday paraded 61 suspects for allegedly committing various crimes in the state. Among the paraded suspects was a Lagos-based Wale Lawal, who is said to be a specialist in the printing and distribution of fake currency across the country. According to the state Commissioner of Police, Abubakar Sadiqu Bello, the police acted on intelligence report before storming Ogbolo Hotel, in Bukansidi area, Lafia to arrest them. Lawal disclosed that he had been robbed and was was seeking financial help from friends without knowing that the N8 million eight given to him by a friend were fake. Other suspects arrested were Yahaya Haruna, 25, for allegedly raping a 10-year old girl in Sabon Pegi, Lafia. Following the attack on Nigerian businesses in South Africa, the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has given South African firms in the country to leave in 48 hours or face the music. The students held a protest in Abuja on Thursday. The President of NANS, Mr. Kadiri Aruna, in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at DSTV office in Abuja, condemned attacks on Nigerians in South Africa. “We are saying that enough is enough as South Africans have openly attacked and bullied Nigerians.’’ The protest would also serve as a warning to other countries trying to underrate Nigerians, hee said, adding that if nothing was done after 48 hours, messages would be sent to students in all university campuses to bring down MTN masts all over the country. Aruna said that DSTV and Shoprite would also be affected as the union had put adequate strategies in place to make the action effective.
